The women’s volleyball team at Holland College has bolstered their lineup for the 2018-19 season with the addition of Islander, Abby Hyndman.

The versatile power currently is a member of the Red Rock U17 team. She also completed her final season as the captain of the Colonel Gray High School team in the fall where they finished second; they took home the PEISAA championships in her previous two seasons.

Hyndman, 5’10” and from Charlottetown, PEI, decided the Graphic Design program at Holland College was the right choice for her.

“I feel Holland College is a good fit for my athletic and academic goals. I am looking forward to the skills I will learn in my program and how I can apply them to future career options. Volleyball was also a major factor in my decision to enroll at Holland College. The Hurricanes have been a consistently strong volleyball team, and with a good group of student-athletes, excellent coaches, and the opportunity to become a better player at the next level, I decided it was the right place for me.”

The scouting report on Hyndman is that she is a strong offensive player with natural power.  Her vertical aids in blocking and hitting over and around blocks and she is able to see the court and play smart as well as aggressive.  She also has a strong service game that can throw off her opponents.

“We are very excited to add local talent to our roster with Abby,” shared Hurricanes women’s volleyball head coach, Lori-Beth Dwyer. “She is a strong and versatile offensive player who will add height and flexibility to our lineup.  She has a positive attitude, is hard working and I believe she will achieve great things while at Holland College.”

Hyndman is no stranger to representing her province.  She was a member of Team PEI for three seasons followed by time with the Canada Games team in 2017.

She was a finalist for the Volleyball PEI Player of the Year award in 2017 and 2018 and a high-school all-star in 2015, 2016 and 2017; including being named the MVP in 2016. She was also the Volleyball PEI U16 Player of the Year in 2016.

The women’s volleyball Hurricanes look to rebound after a disappointing end to their season last year. A regular season record of 18-3 positioned the ‘Canes as the second seed entering the ACAA Championship.  Their quest for a conference banner was cut short when they were upset in the quarter-finals in front of a raucous crowd by the hosts in five sets.
